Stories are more than memories on a page. They help us reclaim our voices, make sense of our experiences, connect with one another, and imagine new possibilities. Sometimes, telling our story is the first act of liberation.
This spring, I had the privilege of facilitating two writing courses at the Alexandra Writers’ Centre Society—Writing in the Wound and Writing to Shift Systems. Over the weeks, I witnessed something extraordinary.
Writers arrived with curiosity, courage, and vulnerability. They trusted the space enough to write what had long remained unspoken. Together, we explored not only craft, but also the ways storytelling can help us move through grief, uncertainty, belonging, identity, and hope.
What stayed with me most were the transformations. Participants spoke of feeling lighter, more liberated, more connected to themselves. They discovered new tools for telling their stories, found meaning in difficult experiences, and wrote pieces that were deeply moving and profoundly human.
When we tell our stories, we don’t simply preserve our experiences—we create space for voices that might otherwise remain unheard. We remind one another that our lives matter, our perspectives matter, and our stories have the power to shift not only ourselves but the communities and systems we inhabit.
Thank you to everyone who shared your words, your trust, and your presence. It was an honour to learn alongside you.
Here’s to the stories still waiting to be told.
